Thirty-nine people have been confirmed dead in separate road accidents across Kano, Ogun and Lagos states over the weekend, with dozens more injured.
In Kano, the Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Public Education Officer, Abdullahi Labaran said 21 people died early Sunday in a head-on collision between a Hummer bus and a trailer on the Zaria-Kano highway.
The crash, caused by the bus driving against traffic, led to a fire that burned most victims beyond recognition. Only three passengers survived with injuries.
On Saturday, 10 people were killed in Ogun State when a bus veered off the Ijebu Ode-Obada Expressway and plunged into a river.
Spokesman of the Ogun State Traffic and Emergency Compliance Agency, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi attributed the crash to wrongful overtaking.
That same day in Lagos, eight passengers, including a driver and conductor, died after a high-speed Mazda bus collided with a DAF truck at Atura Bus Stop on the Mile 2-Badagry Expressway. Emergency responders rescued eight injured passengers.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), police, and state traffic agencies are investigating the incidents and have urged motorists to avoid overspeeding and reckless driving.
Officials said plans are underway to install speed-limiting devices in accident-prone areas.
