Former Chief Security Officer to late military ruler General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha has announced his intention to contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election under the Social Democratic Party.
The retired army officer made the declaration during a strategic meeting with party leaders in Minna, Niger State capital, on Tuesday.
Addressing supporters, Al-Mustapha expressed concern about Nigeria’s current condition. “I am pained and deeply concerned about the current state of the nation. However, with the right direction and commitment, Nigeria can rise again,” he said.
The former CSO described the gathering as part of nationwide consultations to build support ahead of the 2027 polls. Campaign director Jubril Umar Sanda said Al-Mustapha was “fully prepared for the journey ahead” with “integrity, courage, and a clear plan for progress.”
During his Niger State visit, Al-Mustapha travelled to Mokwa to console flood victims after recent disasters displaced over 200 residents and destroyed property worth millions of naira. He called for urgent intervention and long-term flood prevention measures.
SDP State Chairman Alhaji Buhari Yakubu Yarima welcomed the declaration, expressing confidence that “with credible candidates and a clear vision, the SDP will be a force to reckon with in 2027.”
