Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, has been elected Vice Chair of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for 2025, marking the country’s first leadership position on the Council in nearly 50 years.

Dr Tijani’s election, backed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is said to signal Nigeria’s growing influence in shaping global digital policy.

The ITU Council plays a key role in steering the United Nations’ specialised agency for ICTs, overseeing initiatives on connectivity, cybersecurity, and digital inclusion.

Reacting to the announcement, Dr Tijani described his appointment as “a profound honour,” expressing gratitude to the ITU member states for their trust.
