Three students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, lost their lives in a tragic multi-vehicle accident on Saturday at Powerline Junction, near Aleje, along the route to Ikorodu Roundabout.
The victims—two males and one female—reportedly died on the spot, while seven others, including tricycle operators, sustained serious injuries.
The crash involved an unregistered sand-laden tipper truck, a Toyota Corolla (registration number SMK 42 AJ), an MPV bus, and four tricycles. Preliminary investigations by traffic officials revealed that the tipper’s brakes failed while it was moving at high speed, causing the driver to lose control and crash into several vehicles and tricycles.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly arrived at the scene to manage traffic, coordinate rescue operations, and prevent further incidents. The injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, while the bodies of the deceased students were taken to the General Hospital mortuary in Ikorodu.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He prayed for strength for them and a speedy recovery for the injured.
Describing the crash as “entirely avoidable,” Bakare-Oki decried the frequent cases of speeding, reckless driving, and poor vehicle maintenance—particularly brake failures in heavy-duty trucks.
