Tottenham Hotspur chairman, Daniel Levy has publicly addressed the shock dismissal of Ange Postecoglou, insisting that winning the Europa League was not sufficient as Spurs must now challenge for the Premier League title.
Postecoglou’s exit, described as a “unanimous board decision,” came just 16 days after he led Spurs to a historic 1-0 Europa League final victory over Manchester United, ending the club’s 41-year wait for a European trophy.
His replacement, Thomas Frank, arrives from Brentford after seven years and will take charge of Champions League football next season, his first experience in European competition.
Despite the triumph in Bilbao, Postecoglou’s tenure was marred by Spurs’ worst-ever Premier League campaign, ultimately sealing his fate.
“We Need to Win the League” – Levy Demands More
In his first comments since the decision, Levy explained the board’s reasoning in an interview.
“You saw the outpouring of emotion with the parade. It was incredible—we’ve won a European trophy. But it’s not enough. What we haven’t done is more important. We need to win the league.”
Levy expressed gratitude to Postecoglou but stood firm on the need for change:
“I don’t regret appointing Ange. In his first season, we finished fifth, and in his second, we were over the moon to win the trophy. But we need to compete in all competitions, and we felt a change was necessary.”
Levy praised new boss Thomas Frank, highlighting his intelligence, communication skills, and leadership qualities:

“One thing that stood out with Thomas is that he’s highly intelligent, a great communicator, and a super human being, plus all the technical aspects we value.”
Despite the ruthless nature of the decision, Levy insisted Postecoglou would remain part of Spurs’ history:
“I’ve told Ange he’s always welcome back. It was an emotional decision, but we believe it’s the right one for the club.”
